'The Dark Tower' Game Rumored To Join Upcoming Film/TV Series

There isn't a ton of news here to report, merely a little something to tease your gaming taste buds. As you may or may not know, Hollywood veteran Ron Howard and several creative partners are currently planning out an adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series, one which will span film, television and, as we learn today, a video game or games.

"There's also a very ambitious Game component being planned that will further utilize elements from the books," a tipster with "verifiable inside info" told movie news and rumors website AICN. That's all the detail there is on the game side of things, though the tipster also notes that while no greenlight has been given for Howard and his partners, Universal is "giving very strong support" and the expectation is for a "late-summer or early-September start."

"The Dark Tower" series remains one of King's most popular works, even though the gritty sci-fi/Western it is a bit of a departure for an author best known for works of horror like "It" and "Pet Semetary." The eight-volume tales follows Roland Deschain, the last of an order of so-called "gunslingers." He is on a quest to find The Dark Tower, which is said to be a sort of Grand Central Station for all of the various universes. It's pretty heady stuff, with a Wild West-meets-medieval magic kind of vibe.

There's a lot to the story as well, more than a couple of two-hour films and 12-hour TV season or two could hope to capture. The AICN tipster's quote is very encouraging in that regard. He says the game "will further utilize elements from the books," meaning it will expand on and tell more of the story in ways that the film/TV series will not. All of which means, it's a good time to be a gamer and a "Dark Tower" fan.
