Kratos’ PlayStation 3-exclusive appearance in “Mortal Kombat” beat a press release from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment into the news last week, but an official statement from WBIE and Sony did confirm his presence and an April 2011 release window for the game, as details on special editions and retailer-specific pre-order bonuses have also come to light.
“We could not be more excited to have Kratos in the new Mortal Kombat, since we’ve always felt he would fit perfectly into our universe and can’t wait for Mortal Kombat and God of War fans to play this game,” NetherRealm Studios creative director and MK creator Ed Boon said in a press release. “Not only is Kratos in the game, but we have an exciting partnership with Sony to develop Mortal Kombat in Stereoscopic 3-D, which makes the fighting experience much more immersive.”
An FDMK post (via Joystiq) citing a source with access to Warner Home Video’s publicity site, has a screenshot indicating that April 19 could be the date to watch for MK’s rebirth, but even if that info is legit, WBIE has yet to commit to it publicly.
As for the game’s higher-prices special editons, Warner plans on releasing two options for those with Kombat cash to spare. There’s going to be a Kollector’s Edition that comes with Sub-Zero and Scorpion figurines, an art book and DLC in the form of classic Mortal Kombat costume skins and avatar outfits. For those willing to lay down a few more bucks, a Tournament Edition limited to 20,000 copies will come bundled with a “portable fight stick” and everything in the Kollector’s Edition.
Additionally, U.S. retailers will get the following pre-order incentives:
GameStop: Klassic Scorpion Playable Character Skin and the original Scorpion Fatality.
Best Buy: Klassic Sub-Zero Playable Character Skin and the original Sub-Zero Fatality.
Amazon: Klassic Reptile Playable Character Skin and the original Reptile Fatality.
So there you have it. Your options are now on the table. Figure out which combo works for you and get ready for the all the bone-cracking, frozen-corpse-shattering mayhem to return in April.
