'Dead Space 2' Prequel To Be Downloadable This Fall

Dead Space 2 prequel

If you're not sold on "Dead Space 2" just yet, EA has announced that they're going to be offering a downloadable prequel game in 2010 that should serve as something of an appetizer. Courtesy of writer Antony Johnston, who comic book readers should know from his Oni Press series "Wasteland," "Dead Space Ignition" is going to be a "comic-style" game with something EA calls "'Choose Your Own Adventure' type narrative."

"Dead Space Ignition is the first of many exciting game extensions we have planned for the launch of 'Dead Space 2,'" the series' executive producer Steve Papoutsis said in a press release. "The interactive comic-style game will give Dead Space fans a unique perspective on the events leading up to 'Dead Space 2,' and will also introduce the storyline to a brand-new audience of gamers."

I like the idea of a teaser game coming out before the main course, and Johnston is a fine writer. A few words in this announcement did raise some questions, however. First, the nature of the game is a bit ambiguous. Any game that allows choices could be considered a "'Choose Your Own Adventure' type narrative," and in the age of terrible motion comics as marketing gimmicks, I get a little suspicious when I see people in other media trying to appropriate aspects of comics over to their own genres with terms like "comics-style." Hopefully, this game will be an exception though.
