In case you haven’t heard, “Marvel vs. Capcom 3″ was officially announced today. It’s sorta a big deal.
At a press event last week (the embargo for which lifted today), Capcom held a quick Q&A with the designers of the game, and I couldn’t help but ask the question on everyone’s mind: Will the character count in “Marvel vs. Capcom 3″ be comparable to “Marvel vs. Capcom 2″? (Note: “MvC2″ had a whopping 56 playable characters).
Seth Killian, Special Adviser on the game, asked me how many I’d like to see.
“68,” I replied. I’m a jerk like that.
Ryota Niitsuma, Producer for “Marvel vs. Capcom 3″ was quick with a response: “If you give us three more years to make the game, we can give you 68.”
Me: “So should I just divide 68 by three and then I’ll get it?” (Again, I’m a jerk.)
Niitsuma-san pauses and thinks for a moment. Killian asks him what number he thinks he can get away with. There’s some back-and-forth before Niitsuma pipes up again:
“More than ’Street Fighter 4.’ ’Super [Street Fighter 4]’…we’ll see. Right now we’re aiming to have more than 30 characters in the game but we’re still in the middle of development. Going forward to the release date we’ll see how many we can fit in. We’d like to add as many as possible.”
Killian steps in, saying that it’s important to consider the relative simplicity of adding characters in “Marvel vs. Capcom 2″ versus a fully 3D game.
’Marvel vs. Capcom 2′ had 15 years of sprites to steal from and just sort of throw them in the game…These [’Marvel vs. Capcom 3′] characters are all not just brand new, but extremely brand new. This is a brand new engine, purely brand new assets, everything else…Bear with us before we can come up with a final number, because they’re all from scratch.”
So they can’t give us an exact number, but they have revealed well over a dozen of the characters that’ll appear in the game. See how the “Marvel vs. Capcom 3″ character roster is shaping up!
