Paul Verhoeven Working On ‘The Last Express’ Movie Adaptation?

Paul Verhoeven recently spoke to MTV about his next project, saying that he is “working on a movie now that is… situated in 1914. Basically, Indiana Jones-ish you could say, but also Hitchcockian,” he explained in a recent interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz. “We are scripting it. It’s an idea that exists already… from another medium, and so we are making it now into a film narrative.” Verhoeven went on to say that the project was based on a video game.

In the interest of full disclosure, I heard this quote before we ran it and, for the life of me, I wasn’t able to come up with what game it was. There aren’t exactly a bevvy of pre-World War 1 games floating around out there, which I guess might have made it easier to figure out. Alas, I never made the connection.

/Film, however, seems to have figured it out. Jordan Mechner’s classic adventure game, “The Last Express,” would fit that description perfectly. Not only is the game set just before World War 1, but it’s set on a train (a classic Hitchcockian locale) and it features plenty of adventure and intrigue (staples of the Indiana Jones franchise).

While Verhoeven hasn’t gone on record to confirm that this is, indeed, the project, don’t be shocked if you start seeing trailers for “The Last Express” movie in the next few years.
