'Battlestar Galactica' MMO Planned For Syfy.com This Fall

Battlestar Galactica

"Battlestar Galactica" appears to be taking a cue from its spin-off series "Caprica" this fall and opening up virtual world online. Just like "Star Trek Online" before it, "Battlestar Galactica Online" will attempt to recruit some voyagers and offer them a choice of playable races for a little outer space MMO action.

"'Battlestar Galactica' is a supremely gameable intellectual property, with compelling character classes, a fantastic array of ships and weaponry, multiple worlds, and a dramatic storyline," VP and GM of digital platforms for Universal Partnerships & Licensing Bill Kispert said in a press release. "We are excited to work with Bigpoint -- and our partners at Universal Cable Productions and Syfy -- to bring an epic, accessible, and 'always on' 'BSG' experience to fans of the franchise and online gamers alike."

According to the release, "BSG Online" will be playable via web browsers on Syfy.com for a 30-day period, during which you can sign on as a human or a Cylon. I don't know if that means everyone is going to arrive on Earth and the adventure ends after that point or what, but they're touting "state of the art graphics."

"'Battlestar Galactica' has a huge and passionate fan base," CEO and Bigpoint founder Heiko Hubertz said. "We are proud to be able to publish such an internationally famous title as one of our online games. For the first time ever, we're relying completely on Unity in order to offer our users fantastic game graphics right in their browsers."

It sounds like an interesting concept, but the extent to which this game stands out will likely hinge on how it uses the sleeper agent Cylon dynamic. As someone who has spent many hours playing the "Battlestar Galactica" board game, I can vouch for the quality of gaming that can come out of pretending to be a Cylon and aggravating human players. I hope "BSG: Online" is half as fun.
