'Metal Gear Solid' Film Unlikely To Happen In The Near Future

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Christian Bale wasn't on board for a "Metal Gear Solid" movie as of last June, and now it doesn't look like many other people behind the scenes are either. MTV Movies Blog has further details on the stalled film, which producer Michael De Luca has very little faith in at this point.

"[T]he video game companies are very protective of their property and there are certain things a studio requires freedom-wise to market and distribute a movie effectively in a global marketplace and sometimes getting those two things to match up is really hard," De Luca told Collider. "And in the case of 'Metal Gear Solid,' the agendas just….not because the parties weren’t amicable, it was just kind of impossible to get the agendas to match up."

He may have put his reasoning into clinical, business-conscious terms, but that doesn't hide the fact that De Luca's comments clearly point the finger at Konami for not being willing to allow Sony the amount of control they desired. As video games have grown to become a dominant entertainment industry, with "Metal Gear" among its biggest franchises, there's something to be said for Konami's reluctance, though. When you see the amount of cash that "Modern Warfare 2" made in its opening week a few months ago, and you look at what video game adaptations primarily piloted by studios tend to make, the case for creative control on the games industry side becomes much stronger.

If Konami decided that "Metal Gear" sequels and the integrity of the name in the future just weren't worth risking based on the revenue and brand marketing Sony's film might produce, they may be right to stick to their guns. After all, strategy and knowing when to lay low are just as important as big explosions and visible events. If nothing else, the "Metal Gear" series has taught us this much.
