“Bioshock 2” will confront high expectations when the combination sequel/prequel finally reveals itself, and the follow-up to 2007’s popular Game of the Year choice now has a global street date. Tagged for the Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and PC, the the title’s official day of release has been set for February 9.
“Multiplayer in ’BioShock 2′ will provide a rich prequel experience that expands the origins of the BioShock fiction,” a press release this morning stated. “Set during the fall of Rapture, players assume the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions, a premier provider of Plasmids and Tonics in the underwater city of Rapture that was first explored in the original ’BioShock.'”
The game’s intertwined, complimentary modes of play that simultaneously combine sequel and prequel story information will be interesting to see play out. The release offered little new info about the content of the game, but at least there’s now a timeline to watch as 2K works up to the launch.
“Set approximately 10 years after the events of the original ’BioShock,’ the halls of Rapture once again echo with sins of the past,” the release said. “Along the Atlantic coastline, a monster has been snatching little girls and bringing them back to the undersea city of Rapture.”
With all the different story elements and gameplay details floating around about this game, I’m glad to hear that 2K will be trying new features. With the first “BioShock” though, it was the final orchestration of all its strengths — across design, gameplay and story that ultimately wowed me. Let’s hope “BioShock 2″ can do the same.
