“Max Payne 3,” the sequel to the 2001 and 2003 “Max Payne” games for the previous generation of consoles and PCs, has been announced for a Winter 2009 release by Rockstar Games.
This third console “Max Payne” is coming from Rockstar Vancouver, the studio behind Rockstar’s open-world high-school adventure “Bully.” It’s set for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
Today’s announcement indicated that the “Max Payne 3” will send its hero, a “hard-boiled New York City detective with a penchant for violence,” to a city far removed from his native New York
Rockstar is promising “classic elements and hyper-intense action” but a new direction to the Max Payne story. “We’re starting a new chapter of Max’s life with this game,” said Sam Houser, Rockstar Games, in the company’s statement. “This is Max as we’ve never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of ’Max Payne 2’ and witness his last chance for salvation.”
Rockstar gave no indication that the game would have any connection to last year’s “Max Payne” movie.
The original Max Payne was lauded for its storytelling, its noir graphics and its early use of slow-motion so-called Bullet Time. The first two games were developed by Remedy Entertainment, which has been off making the mysterious Xbox 360 title “Alan Wake” for the last few years.
After releasing just “Midnight Club: Los Angeles” in the back half of last year, Rockstar has commited to making the end of 2009 much richer with the studio’s content. “Red Dead Redemption,” a sequel to Rockstar’s Western “Read Dead Revolver” is slated for the fall. A second exclusive Xbox 360 episodic expansion to “Grand Theft Auto: IV” has been confirmed by Rockstar owner Take 2 Interactive for release by Halloween. “Max Payne 3,” slated for winter, joins that roster.
A Rockstar representative confirmed to MTV Multiplayer that the “Winter 2009” timeframe obviously refers to the coming winter. Since that timeframe starts in late December, it’s not clear if that means the game will be out in 2009 or 2010.
