Box Art Reviews: The Guys-With-Guns Edition

It's that time of year where game publishers pull out the big guns -- literally. Check out this week's round of box art reviews, which features dudes wielding weapons of mass destruction...

"Legendary" (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

What the Box Tells Us: A man fires his weapon at a giant bird about to attack. Meanwhile, a werewolf-type thing is tearing some guy's face off, and a minotaur is about to charge. A severed Statue of Liberty head lies in the background.

Cons: That one gun doesn't look like it's going to do any good against four mythical creatures.

Pros: It looks like "Cloverfield" but with way cooler monsters -- and no annoying comic relief carrying video cameras that I can see.

Love It or Leave It: Love it.

"Resistance 2" (PS3)

What the Box Tells Us: A man holds a gun amid a war-torn city while a spaceship hovers in the sky. Meanwhile, a pair of scary-looking swamp monsters lurk behind him...

Pros: Er, the cover lets you know you'll be fighting aliens that are taking over the world.

Cons: The guy with the gun takes up half the cover, but he's not that interesting to look at -- he's plain and bald and doesn't even have pupils. Meanwhile, the rest of the cover is orange, presumably from a raging fire. But there's really not much going on here.

Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Gears of War 2" (Xbox 360)

What the Box Tells Us: A man holds a gun amid a war-torn city while spaceships hover in the sky. Seems kind of familiar...

Pros: There's little to no use of fire -- the number one indicator of a post-apocalyptic game -- save for some smoking buildings in the background.

Cons: The sepia-toned color scheme makes it look old-timey and boring. Grandpa Fenix says, "When I was your age, I had to walk 15 miles up a hill just to curb-stomp some Locust heads."

Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Secret Service: Ultimate Sacrifice" (Xbox 360, PS2, PC)

What the Box Tells Us: A Secret Service agent shoots his gun at an off-the-box assailant. It looks as if the White House is on fire and soldiers from helicopters are dropping down from the sky.

Pros: When I think Secret Service, I think of a guy jumping in front of a bullet. Here, the box art makers went with a less obvious design showing that the Secret Service are more than human bulletproof vests in this game.

Cons: But if the choppers are called in, why is this guy on the front lines with just a handgun? And um, who's watching the president?

Love It or Leave It: Leave it.

"Quantum of Solace" (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, DS, PC)

What the Box Tells Us: The box shows us the protagonist holding his gun -- in a suit as he climbs over a gravelly hill.

Cons: Bond's pouty face and dapper suit don't match his giant gun. What's he going to do with it besides carry it around like that? And oh yeah, this image is taken directly from the movie trailer.

Pros: The cover is crisp and cleanly executed -- just like how Bond's actions should be.

Love It or Leave It: Love it.
