What We're NOT Playing -- Volume 34 (Sorry 'Lost Planet Extreme: Colonies' And 'Enemy Territory: Quake Wars')

It's a slow week for game releases. So slow, in fact, that one of our picks for a game we're not playing is actually a remix of "Lost Planet." The option to play as an akrid in multiplayer isn't enough for Jason Cipriano or myself, apparently.

We also found common ground on "Enemy Territory: Quake Wars," and Jason tries to convince me for the second or third time that I should give "Call of Duty 4" multiplayer a fair shake. I may take him up on it this time.

JasonCipriano: Aside from the really obvious choices this week, I will be passing on "Lost Planet Extreme: Colonies"

JasonCipriano: Does that count?

PatrickKlepek: Well, did you play the original?

JasonCipriano: I did not, and that's basically the reason.

JasonCipriano: The first one was paced way too slow for my enjoyment

JasonCipriano: Slushing through the snow at a snails pace causes me to be bored and frustrated, and I lose interest really quick when something like that happens

PatrickKlepek: So you're not interested as playing as a giant alien akrid in multiplayer.

JasonCipriano: Not at all.

Discover more of our reasons for passing by reading on.

PatrickKlepek: Isn't it a little strange that Konami is shipping the "Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" strategy guide ahead of the game's release date?

PatrickKlepek: I most definitely do not want to play that strategy guide.

JasonCipriano: That's a fairly good call.

JasonCipriano: Perhaps they want you to be all ready to go when the game actually arrives.

JasonCipriano: You can do your advance studying.

JasonCipriano: It's like you got the answers to the test beforehand.

PatrickKlepek: I only wish I could have experienced spoilers for my college finals.

PatrickKlepek: You would get no complaints of a "spoiler alert" from me.

JasonCipriano: Yeah, I don't think anyone would really complain about that.

JasonCipriano: Anywho... are there any actual games you aren't playing this week?

PatrickKlepek: I finished "Grand Theft Auto IV" over a week ago, and I've been struggling to come up with something new to play. Everything feels so...small...compared to that game's epic adventure.

PatrickKlepek: But there is one game this week I know I won't be touching, and that's "Enemy Territory: Quake Wars."

JasonCipriano: Now you're just bragging ... "Oh .. I'm all done with 'GTA IV'"

JasonCipriano: Really, why won't you be going near "Quake Wars"?

PatrickKlepek: I'm almost tempted to try it. I keep looking for the game that will entice me to play its multiplayer on any significant level. I thought "GTA IV" might be the game to do it. It wasn't. Maybe "Quake Wars" would, but given it's a multiplayer-only affair, I'm immediately turned off.

JasonCipriano: Have you tried "Call of Duty 4" yet?

PatrickKlepek: No. It's the only one I've considered going back to.

JasonCipriano: It's really been the first game ever to suck me into over a days worth of gameplay strictly for the multiplayer

PatrickKlepek: I really want to try it. It seems like it'd deliver on what I want from a multiplayer experience.

PatrickKlepek: But, no, I haven't put the disc back in yet.

PatrickKlepek: I'm not particularly enjoying the combat in "Condemned 2," so maybe a tour of duty is just what I need, since I certainly loved the combat there.

JasonCipriano: It's not just that the gameplay is done well in "CoD4," it's that the multiplayer is a rewarding experience, with the XP you earn each game, you unlock more weapons, perks, etc., and it really offers a lot of incentive to keep playing

JasonCipriano: If you can't tell "CoD4" is what I am playing (and have been).

PatrickKlepek: That's what I'm told, and that's why it may be the one that hooks me. The "experience" is tangible. I don't get a kick out of being number one on a leaderboard.

PatrickKlepek: But "CoD4" is old hat. What aren't you playing this week?

JasonCipriano: I also though we just established that I have a multiplayer game I'm happy with?

PatrickKlepek: I mostly played through "Lost Planet" because it was so damn gorgeous. The visuals in some of the later stages were absolutely astounding. But I agree, the combat left much to be desired. Too stiff.

PatrickKlepek: I never understood why its multiplayer could then prove so popular.

JasonCipriano: Targets are easier to hit when they aren't moving quickly

JasonCipriano: That's my best guess

PatrickKlepek: You probably have a point. Sounds like both of us are passing on "Lost Planet."

PatrickKlepek: Sorry, Capcom.

JasonCipriano: It's okay. I think they have some other stuff lined up that I'll be spending my money on instead.

JasonCipriano: So will those be the only two you're passing on this week.

PatrickKlepek: There's not much else coming out. I played "Mass Effect" on Xbox 360, so a pass on the PC version. And I have no idea if "Death Jr" on Wii is any good. But I have my suspicions.

PatrickKlepek: I still haven't played "Okami."

JasonCipriano: I have to shamefully admit that neither have I.

JasonCipriano: Either the Wii or PS2

PatrickKlepek: Maybe that's what I should play post-"Condemned." A game from my pile of shame.

JasonCipriano: Don't call it a "Pile of Shame" just call it ... umm... your "Pile of Games That are Too Long To Make a Commitment To Right Now, But You'll Get To Them Eventually."

PatrickKlepek: "Okami" is 40+ hours, last I heard.

PatrickKlepek: Then again, I made it through "GTA IV" in just a few weeks.

JasonCipriano: But at what cost?

JasonCipriano: AT WHAT COST?

JasonCipriano: Have you played "Penny Arcade Adventures"

JasonCipriano: Have you played "The World Ends With You"

JasonCipriano: Have you played anything else that has come out in the past few weeks?

JasonCipriano: "Mario Kart" "WiiFit" "LostWinds"

PatrickKlepek: I've played 30 minutes of "Penny Arcade," none of "The World Ends With You" (that will change on my next flight)," finished "LostWinds," played a little of "Mario Kart" before shelving it and exercising regularly with "WiiFit."

PatrickKlepek: Take that.

JasonCipriano: Damn.

JasonCipriano: You're doing so much better than I am.

PatrickKlepek: That's just the way it is, Jason.

JasonCipriano: You juggle a lot better than I do.

PatrickKlepek: I could turn that into a joke. But I won't.

JasonCipriano: Appreciated.

JasonCipriano: How about this.... Is there anything that you will be playing this week?

PatrickKlepek: Nope. It's business as usual in MTV Multiplayer San Francisco.

JasonCipriano: Nice. Well with that, I'll leave you to your "Lost" finale.

JasonCipriano: Wait ... I'm going to spoil it for you.

JasonCipriano: It's going to end with a cliffhanger

PatrickKlepek: Jerk.

JasonCipriano: I'm psychic ... what can I say?
