This is the fifth in a series of posts about the games I played and/or finished for fun for the first time in 2007. For comparisons' sake, see my 2006 list. My previous post in the series was about the PS2 and Xbox games I played.
I can confirm that there was no Wii drought last year, at least not in my house.
In 2007 I played more Wii games than I did disc-based games on any other console. I popped in 24 of them and finished six. But when it rains, does it pour quality? I permanently ejected some of these games in mere minutes. Onward with the recount…
My Wii Games I Played For Fun 2007 Playlist
(Games I finished are in italics)
1) "Battalion Wars II"
Nintendo gave me early dibs on this game, but I would have played through it anyway. I'm told there are better, more complex real-time-strategy/action war game hybrids, but this one was pleasant and bombastic enough for me. And it has very pretty submarine-based levels.
2) "Big Brain Academy"
The DS was making me smart enough, thank you very much.
3) "The BIGS"
I understand the idea of swinging the Wii remote as if it's a tennis racket, or mock-chucking it like it's a bowling ball. But I literally can't get the swing of using it as a baseball bat. I always feel like I should be standing further away and I never feel like my swinging is that connected to the motion of the bat I see on my TV, even though I know it is. I'm not sure what my problem is, but, basically Wii bat-swinging just doesn't work for me.
5) "Cooking Mama: Cook Off"
6) "EA Playground"
7) "Geometry Wars: Galaxies"
I picked this game as my 10th favorite game of the year (and you thought "Desktop Tower Defense" was obscure). Even wilder, this is the only game I played on two platforms, in this case the DS and the Wii. The versions play the same, though the Wii one has significantly better graphics. And this is one of those games I almost cleared. I played it for many hours, accessed all the galaxies and maxed out my drone of choice: the sniper. That last thing only makes sense to others who were hooked on the game. What did anyone else upgrade? I hear the ram dram is great.
8) "Guitar Hero III"
9) "Link's Crossbow Training"
Not only did I beat this game, so did my wife.
10) "Madden 08"
11) "Manhunt 2"
If you're going to try to be an authority on a game, you should play the whole thing, no?
12) "Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games"
Arm-waving mini-games, they're often not for me.
13) "Mario Party 8"
14) "Mario Strikers: Charged"
I played this one online once. And the other Wii games I played online? There weren't any.
15) "Medal of Honor Heroes 2"
16) "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption"
I finished this game and wanted to show all the cool late-game things I found in it to my friends. But… I over-wrote my save file, which now has my Samus Aran back at the start of a new campaign. It's not the first time I've made that kind of end-game mistake. Why do developers let that happen?
17) "Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles"
18) "Sonic And The Secret Rings"
This one is the opposite of "Crackdown" for me. In this case, no game made a finer press demo before just not clicking with me on my home machine than "Sonic" for the Wii. And I was telling people this game was going to be great.
19) "SSX Blur"
Nice try, but "SSX 3" is still my champ.
20) "Super Mario Galaxy"
I haven't touched this game since November, but I'll be getting back to it soon.
21) "Super Paper Mario"
22) "WarioWare: Smooth Moves"
23) "Wing Island"
24) "Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
This is my current game. It's resting in my Nintendo console as I write this. I'm halfway through and enjoying all parts except the optional bell-ringing mini-game. Avoid that mini-game unless you want a sore wrist.
And here's a bonus for this Wii post:
My Wii Virtual Console Games I Played For Fun 2007 Playlist
(Games I finished are in italics)
1) "Guardian Heroes" [CORRECTION: I meant "Gunstar Heroes"]
2) "Sin and Punishment"
I already beat this game on the N64 in 2006, but it's so good I had to go back. Play the aircraft carrier level, people.
Otherwise, I didn't use the VC that much this year. How about the other consoles' download services? I'll address that tomorrow.
In 2006 I played 102 games for fun and finished 21.
As of this, the fifth of nine posts, the 2007 stats are 69 played; 24 finished.
Did I break my 2006 mark? I broke my finished games mark, at least!
Check back soon for the next posts in this series, round-ups of all the XBLA and PSN games I played for fun last year.
