Totilo Games Played In 2007 – The PlayStation 2 And Xbox List

This is the fourth in a series of posts about the games I played and/or finished for fun for the first time in 2007. For comparisons’ sake, see my 2006 list. My previous post in the series was about the PS3 games I played.

I’m so retro that in 2007 I still played some PlayStation 2 and Xbox games. Who can turn their back on old classics from yesteryear?

In fact, the ludicrously high quality of PS2 games I played in 2007 was another reminder of how wonderful the late part of a console’s lifespan can be.

(Games I finished are in italics)

1) “Bully

Like “Resistance: Fall of Man,” this is a special-case game on my list: I started it in 2006, but finished it in 2007. Given the “Manhunt 2” madness that happened since I finished this game, it really feels like “Bully” came from a more innocent time. Really, there’s nothing more scandalous here than the ability to throw your schoolmates into their lockers or give them wedgies.

2) “Final Fantasy XII

I gave this game a dozen ours, felt love, felt hate, asked for advice, and then bowed out.

3) “God Hand

This game, and the next, kept my PS3 busy in the spring. Thank goodness for backwards compatibility. I really didn’t like “God Hand” the first time I tried it at home. In fact, I remember loathing it at E3 2006. But I warmed to it quite a bit in 2007. In a recent Slate exchange I participated in regarding the best games of 2007, I wrote:

If 2006’s games had been eligible, a 15-hour PlayStation 2 brawling game called “God Hand” that I first played in 2007 may have topped my list. Had I been able to pick “God Hand,” I would have been talking about how its slapstick action-adventure makes it the Charlie Chaplin to “BioShock“’s Welles. Thanks to “God Hand,” I have at last played a game in which my character could learn to buckle his male enemies with a bell-sounding kick to the groin and submit his female foes to an interactive speed-spanking. BioShock may be a commentary on what game designers have been doing to gamers for decades. But it is “God Hand “that lampoons the contract for lowbrow content that manly gamers and manly game-makers have been tacitly agreeing to for years.

4) “God of War 2

5) “Odin Sphere

Beautiful game, but with an inventory system that makes “Mass Effect“’s look elegant. I went through the first character’s adventure, which could have been a full game itself. I didn’t do the others’.

6) “Okami

I cleared it. I wrote some opinions about the announced Wii port of the game. I stirred a hornet’s nest.

And what of Microsoft’s old machine?

1) “Halo 2

I started this game in 2004 and didn’t get back to it until early one Monday morning in September of 2007, the same Monday I would later spend playing through “Halo 3.” I wrote about the feat on this blog. Other than that, I didn’t touch any Xbox games in 2007.

Did I miss anything for the old systems? Other than “Persona 3,” which I’m leery of after my last “Shin Megami Tensei” experience?

Dramatic Calculations

In 2006 I played 102 games for fun and finished 21.
As of this, the fourth of nine posts, the 2007 stats are 43 played; 16 finished.

Did I break my 2006 mark?

Check back next week for the next post in this series, a round-up of all the Wii games I played for fun last year.
