'Clone Wars' Canceled: What's Next For 'Star Wars' On TV?

Clone Wars

A day after the sad, sad news that Lucasfilm had decided to cancel "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," fans of the series are left with lots and lots of questions about what's going on and what it means for the future of "Star Wars" on TV.

After thinking over the news for a day, we decided to put together a little recap of what we know so far.

A New Era

A focal point of Lucasfilm's announcement about the cancellation of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" was that the new show would cover a "time period previously untouched in 'Star Wars' films or television programming." This can mean many things, but two points stick out.

» An untouched time period means lots of "new." New characters. New vehicles. New worlds. New weapons. The prequel trilogy was the last time we got an influx of new "Star Wars" material, and we saw the universe expand dramatically. A new television program could mean a comparable shift.

» The cancelling of "Clone Wars" and the insistence on a different time period hints that the new Lucasfilm may be trying to distance itself from the prequels, at least for the time being. It also proves that they're invested in a exploring the universe in ways that we have not been used to. In this regard, they seem to be living up to the promise of the acquisition announcement.

Disney XD

This became the gut response of the day yesterday. Yes, it does indeed seem like whenever Lucasfilm Animation does get around to a new animated "Star Wars" show, it will go to the House of Mouse's boy-oriented cable channel.

The instant internet reaction to the news of the "Star Wars Detours" indefinite delay was largely "This will never see the light of day." But one of the show's creators, Seth Green, shot those rumors down writing, "As you may know, Detours is on hold while Lucasfilm focuses on the new Star Wars films. Don't fear, you'll see it when the timing's right."
