Angelina Jolie Taps Coen Brothers To Rewrite Next Directorial Effort

Here's a collaboration we never thought we'd see: Angelina Jolie has tapped Joel and Ethan Coen to rewrite her next directorial effort, "Unbroken."

That's right, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Jolie has managed to wrangle the Coen Brothers to make sure that her next film will be in the best shape it can possibly be. This movie has been in development at Universal for over 50 years, but Jolie only recently took the project from former helmer Francis Lawrence. If the movie had script issues, the Coens really are the right people to be asked to straighten them out.

"Unbroken" is based on the story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic track star who went on to become a World War II Air Force officer and, later, prisoner of war. Laura Hillenbrand released a biography of Zamperini back in 2010 called "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption," and Universal bought the rights a year later.

"I read Laura Hillenbrand's brilliant book, and I was so moved by Louie Zamperini's heroic story, I immediately began to fight for the opportunity to make this film," Jolie said in a statement when her involvement with "Unbroken" was announced. "Louie is a true hero and a man of immense humanity, faith and courage. I am deeply honored to have the chance to tell his inspiring story."

This movie is expected to begin production at some point in 2013 -- likely after the Coens submit their draft of the script.
