Unexpected ‘Star Wars’ Spin-Offs That Would Be Better Than Young Han Solo

By Ryan Rigley

Turns out the galaxy far, far away is actually a lot closer than we thought. Yesterday, Entertainment Weekly broke the news of several “Star Wars” spin-off films scheduled to be released at the same time as Episodes VII, VIII and IX. “I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films,” reveals Disney CEO Bob Iger. “Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great “Star Wars” characters that are not part of the overall saga.”

Chief amongst these standalone “Star Wars” films are solo movies for fan-favorite characters Han Solo and Boba Fett; with the “Young Han Solo” movie taking place between “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope” and the “Bobba Fett” film taking place sometime during the original trilogy. While it comes as no surprise that these two characters in particular are getting their own films, we can’t help but wonder what other “Star Wars” characters have bigger stories to tell.

Admiral Ackbar
Hailing from the water world Dac, Gial Ackbar was raised as a prominent member of a merchant clan where he developed a curiosity for science and the sea. Eventually, Ackbar is selected as Coral City’s representative on the Calamarian Council and would later become the leader of Mon Calamari space exploration during the Clone Wars. Admiral Ackbar’s spin-off would be similar to “Young Han Solo,” in that we see his origin story, except with a lot more traps.

Arguably most famous for being shot by Han Solo, Greedo is a male Rodian bounty hunter who grew up on Tatooine with Anakin Skywalker, a.k.a. Darth Vader. Although his father was an esteemed bounty hunter, Greedo obviously did not inherit any of these traits. His spin-off movie would bring these daddy issues to the forefront, giving us a sense of who Greedo was and even detailing the reckless decisions that would eventually lead to his death at the Spaceport Cantina.

Lando Calrissian
He’s been known as many things throughout the “Star Wars” universe; gambler, smuggler, general, entrepreneur. Hell, he’s even the original owner of the Millenium Falcon. The “Lando Calrissian” movie would give us a look at all of those different sides of Lando and then some, showing us his rise to power from con artist to Baron Administrator for Bespin’s Cloud City.

Jabba the Hutt
Everyone’s favorite frog-eating crime lord, “Jabba the Hutt” would be similar to “Lando Calrissian” in that we see his rise to power; albeit on the complete opposite side of the law. We’d see Jabba’s earliest forays into crime (i.e. spice-smuggling, gunrunning, and slavery) and how he worked his way up to being one of the most notorious crime lords in the entire galaxy. Come to think of it, “Jabba the Hutt” could be a lot like “Scarface.”

Max Rebo
The man (or elephant?) behind the Max Rebo Band, Rebo is a blue Ortolan with a talent for the red ball organ. Growing up under the name Siiruulian Phantele, the young musician would soon be discovered at a local flanth house by manager Evar Orbus. After changing his unpronounceable name, Max is immediately set up with a full band and the rest is history. The “Max Rebo” movie would show us an aspect of the “Star Wars” universe that we’ve never seen before; think “Spinal Tap” in space.

Jar Jar Binks
Just kidding, please don’t make this movie.
