‘The Raid 2: Berendal’ Begins Production

The sequel to “The Raid: Redemption” has officially started production. Though it might not have started shooting on January 19 like Gareth Evans promised, PT Merantau Films and XYZ Films have sent out a press release stating that “The Raid 2: Berendal” began production on January 31.

“To all our fans thank you so much for your support. We can’t wait to come back and show you what we have been working on,” Evans said in the release. “We’ll be there in 2014 with a film bigger, better and bloodier! Wish us luck.”

We’d wish them luck, but someone we’re guessing they don’t need it. The upcoming film brings back Iko Uwais in the main role, and also stars Tio Pakusadewo, Putra Arifin Scheunamann, Julie Estelle, Alex Abbad and Roy Marten. “Berendal” picks up where “The Raid” ended as Rama goes undercover in the Jakarta crime syndicate to try to unearth corruption in the police force and protect his family.

MTV News spoke with Evans while he promoted “The Raid” and he teased at the time what the planned sequel would look like. He used more words, but he basically underlined the “bigger, better and bloodier” premise.

“The sequel is going to be a big departure in a way, in that we won’t just copy the same formula as the first film,” he said. “It’s not going to be set within one building this time. Everything that was terrifying about the boss in that building in the first movie is small fry compared to the criminal organization we meet in the second film. We take it out into the streets, go much wider and much bigger in terms of the scope.”
