Machete don’t text, but apparently he’s cool with space travel.
At Robert Rodriguez’s San Diego Comic-Con panel last week, the filmmaker floated an idea that after he makes “Machete Kills,” a follow-up to last year’s witty grindhouse flick, he’d go ahead and make “Machete Kills Again,” a film that would take place in effing outer space!
Seriously? That’s some kooky cinematic stuff. It comes, after all, from the mouth of a guy who likes to float some hope-and-dream scenarios in public, like the time he told me he wanted to start shooting a live-action adaptation of “The Jetsons” within the next 12 months, only to ditch those plans shortly after our chat. But Rodriguez has also delivered on his (and our) fanboy reveries before. Just witness the bloody, wacky, I-can’t-believe-he-actually-got-to-make-this-thing movie, “Machete.” And now, as hinted at SDCC, he’s gearing up to take Danny Trejo’s Machete, a vigilante badass with an affinity for big knives and fast women, into the stars for a third installment.
“It is a space opera. It does take place in space. Machete has to go into space,” Rodriguez confirmed. “It’s so absurd but it makes sense. You’ve got to go somewhere new in a third part — why not go into space? It’s going to be so fun. It’s played straight. Remember ’Moonraker’? It’s going to be like ’Machete’ and ’Moonraker.'”
Hey, if you say so! Here’s our only question (and we know it’s silly and beside the point): How the heck does Machete get into space?
“You see him in a space shuttle,” Rodriguez told us. “The bad guy escapes the planet. ’Part 3′ has to take place in space. Space babes, a machete-shaped lightsaber. You gotta have it!”
