'Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol' Trailer: Cruise Control

If you had any doubts that Tom Cruise is still the man, please, let the "Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol" trailer lay them to rest.

In the first official trailer for director Brad Bird's take on the "Mission Impossible" franchise, we get just about all the information we need to know what Ethan Hunt's latest adventure is all about -- even an apt definition for the titular "Ghost Protocol."

Tom Wilkinson (the latest veteran actor to follow in the footsteps of "Mission Impossible" predecessors Jon Voight, Anthony Hopkins and Laurence Fishbourne), joined by potential new franchise leading man Jeremy Renner, meets with Hunt in the back of a limousine and explains that some truly terrible things are afoot.

"An hour ago, a bomb blew up the Kremlin," he coolly informs him. "The president has initiated Ghost Protocol, the entire IMF has been disavowed. Now, I've been ordered to take you to Washington where they will hang the Kremlin bombing on you and your team, unless you were to escape after assaulting Brandt and me. But if any of your team is caught, they'll be branded as terrorists."

And just like that, Ethan Hunt has gone rogue. Again. But he's not alone: he's got a more than capable team at his disposal including the aforementioned Renner as Brandt, the beautiful Paula Patton, the returning tension-reliever Simon Pegg and "Lost" star Josh Holloway (who makes a handful of badass appearances in the trailer).

So, back to Cruise being the man. He really, really is. The guy is nearly 50 years old and he makes climbing the world's tallest building look like an army crawl through a pleasant meadow. Perhaps it's just the out-of-shape blogger in me, but I'm pretty damn impressed. More thoughts on the trailer coming later.
