'Vlad' Director Anthony Mandler Is 'Deep' Into Dracula's Story, Says Casting Announcements Are Imminent

VladOh vampires! They are everywhere these days and with at least one more vampire-esque flick in the works, "Vlad," it doesn't seem like they're going away soon.

MTV News recently chatted with director Anthony Mandler, the man helming the origin story about Vlad The Impaler — better known as Dracula, though the blood-sucking angle won't make the final cut of this film — and he seemed enthusiastic that there will be some big announcements on the movie's front very shortly. What kind of announcements, you ask? Well, like who is going to be in the movie!

"And I'm also deep into 'Vlad,' the origin story of Dracula," he told us last week. "I think kind of shortly things are going to start unfolding."

[Side note: For those of you going, "Wait, there's no actual vampires in this film?", don't worry — it'll still be plenty gory. The movie will center on Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia (now part of Romania), as he defends his dominion from the Ottoman Empire. The ruler had a reputation for horribly sadistic torture and execution methods, earning him the nickname Vlad the Impaler. So, as Paul Thomas Anderson so recently declared, there will be blood!]

While casting is still unknown, Mandler seemed pretty excited by who is in talks to join the project, which has been in the works for some time now.

"We have a rewrite that the story loves and we're optimistic as to our casting," he confessed. "I can't talk about that yet."

Hm… Zac Efron, anyone?
