Movies like “Hobo With a Shotgun” and “Machete” have breathed new life into the exploitation subgenre, and “Skinny Dip” is upping the ante with a great cast that includes Sasha Grey, badass Danny Trejo, and now Pam Grier, Michael Madsen, and Brigitte Nielsen. Meanwhile, Halle Berry is battling sharks in “Dark Tide,” but the cast of “Sector 7” has to deal with a transparent monster on board their ship. There’s a vampire on Venice Beach that wants to take a bite out of you. No, it isn’t Lindsay Lohan, but she’s dressed to kill for a new bloodsucking photoshoot that “Buffy” star Sarah Michelle Gellar would probably put a stake to.
It’s all in this week’s Horror Bites after the jump.
Lindsay Isn’t a Train Wreck — She’s a Vampire!
If you can’t keep up with the drama that is Lindsay Lohan, you’re not alone. And it’s only May, so who knows what the rest of the year holds for this struggling actress? Celeb photographer Tyler Shields has shot some controversial images of Lohan before, and this time she gets vampy for the artist with Michael Trevino – who plays Tyler Lockwood on “The Vampire Diaries.” Shields talks about the shoot on his blog: “What can I say Lindsay she takes it to another level the way she works is incredible she killed it and she killed Trevino … ” Watch Lindsay and Trevino trade bloody kisses in this trailer.
Who is Sasha Grey Taking a “Skinny Dip” With?
Holy hell the cast of Frankie Latina’s “Skinny Dip” is ah-mazing! Sexy exploitation legend Pam Grier, Michael Madsen (“Reservoir Dogs”), and Brigitte Nielsen (“Rocky IV”) join the previously announced Sasha Grey (“The Girlfriend Experience”) and Danny Trejo (“Machete”) for the story about “a girl who takes an innocent dare, ends up terribly victimized, and then seeks shotgun-wielding revenge while wearing a stolen police uniform.” The films’ tagline is awesome: “They took her bikini. They took her virginity. She took her revenge.” Hurray for another violent and groovy-looking exploitation throwback! [THR]
“Paranormal Activity” Director Creates a Ghost Town
Oren Peli – who directed the supernatural hit “Paranormal Activity” and produced this year’s creepy chiller, “Insidious” – is writing/producing a new film about a group of friends who get stranded in a ghost town “overrun by nature.” [Screen Daily]
Halle Berry Fights the “Dark Tide”
We got to peek at the first image from Halle Berry’s new action-thriller that also features the deadliest creatures of the ocean – sharks. “Dark Tide” finds the actress playing a shark expert who survives a near-fatal attack. She is forced to face the fierce underwater predators again when she returns to the scene a year later. Apparently director Amy Sorlie is an accomplished shark diver, which gives “Dark Tide” some serious sharky cred. [Black Film]
David Hasselhoff Joins “Piranha 3DD”
We just can’t quit you “Piranha 3DD,” and apparently you won’t let us even if we tried, because every week there’s someone new who has hopped on board to join the crew. At least that someone is none other than “The Hoff,” and he’s going to be battling pissed-off piranha alongside the previously announced Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, Gary Busey, Katrina Bowden, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, and David Koechner. What’s the over/under on a “Baywatch” or “Anaconda 3” reference in the film? [FEAR Net]
New Photo of “Fright Night” Star David Tennant as Peter Vincent
This August we’ll finally be able to get our mits on the “Fright Night” remake in 3D. “Doctor Who” star David Tennant is tackling the role of the TV horror host Peter Vincent, who helps Charley stake a few bloodsuckers that move in next door. Tennant is channeling master illusionist Criss Angel in this image from Fangoria, which is a far cry from the older and wiser gent (Roddy McDowall) in the original film. [Fangoria]
Sarah Michelle Gellar Stakes the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” Reboot
It’s hard to imagine watching a “Buffy the Vampire” reboot that doesn’t have creator Joss Whedon’s name attached to it. In fact, it feels downright sacrilege. “Buffy” star Sarah Michelle Gellar agrees, and thinks it’s the “dumbest idea [she’s] ever heard.”
“Final Destination 5” Trailer Proves Death is One Sick, Sadistic Bitch
The cast of Final Destination 5 have a date with Death – again. We looked at a few ways that the survivors of a suspension bridge collapse are put through their paces in the film’s new trailer. Your eyeballs probably won’t thank you for this, sorry.
“Vampire in Venice” Might Not Suck
The Cannes Film Festival isn’t really horror heaven, but there are a few flicks that the buyers and sellers of the market have their sights set on, and “Vampires in Venice” is one of them. The Deborah Goodwin directed bloodsucker stars Edward Remington Hoffman as Keith, a would-be actor who moves to Venice Beach, California to make it big. While there, he’s attacked by a thirsty bat and begins to transform into one of the undead. The trailer – which Bloody Disgusting shared this week – has a few funnies and feels a little “Lost Boys,” which might not be a bad thing.
“Sector 7” Slithers on Board at Cannes
The Korean monster flick, “Sector 7” starring Ha ji-won (“Phone”) has been swept up at the Cannes market. The film – which hits Korean theaters this summer – surrounds a group working on an oil rig who become fish food for an ocean-dwelling, transparent creature that has crept on board through the drilling pipe. Check out the trailer.
New Behind-the-Scenes Images from “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”
See director Timur Bekmambetov guiding Benjamin Walker as the vampire-killing president in a new behind-the-scenes image from “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” There’s also a pic of the actor suited up in full prez gear. Tim Burton is producing the film based on a novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, which follows the fearless leader who avenges his mother’s death by launching a brutal attack on the undead. Sasquatch Gonna Git You Sucka
Everyone could use more Bigfoot in their life, and the folks at Animal Planet plan on hunting the hairy guy down for a new six-part series, “Finding Bigfoot.” A four-person team made of skeptics and believers alike will get a little “Ghost Hunters-esque” in the wild when they try to capture evidence and come to some kind of Sasquatchian conclusions about this mysterious American legend.
