It wouldn't be a Summer Movie Preview week without a few too many shots and an unforgettably forgettable night in Bangkok, right? That's why we're continuing our all-week look at the summer season's hottest movies today with an exclusive photo from "The Hangover Part II," director Todd Phillips' follow-up to his 2009 breakout hit. It's a rare look at all four members of the wolf pack — Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha — with mere moments to go before their drunken misadventures through the streets of Thailand commence.
In addition to the photo, MTV News sat down with Phillips to talk about the "Hangover" sequel, and he explained why he thinks round two is going to work just as well (if not better than) the original film.
"I think there are very few sequels that have been made that live up to or exceed their first film. 'The Godfather' is the first one," said the director. "We had always planned on calling it 'The Hangover 2,' and when we finished the script, I changed the cover page and wrote 'The Hangover Part II,' because I think the film lives up to or exceeds the first one. It was very much a nod to 'The Godfather.'"
But the "Godfather" comparisons may end there — because even though the third film in that franchise was critically skewered, Phillips isn't closed off to the idea of a third "Hangover."
"I could [do a third]," he said. "And I'm only saying that because we love working together — me, Ed, Bradley, Zach, Justin, Ken Jeong. We have such a good time on these movies. I know it sounds absurd, but I see other movies that have gone to three and you go, 'I get why they do it.' It's actually fun. We just spend the whole day laughing and trying to make a movie."
