With all the hype and excitement surrounding "Scream 4," I'm actually surprised it didn't perform better at the box office last weekend. Wes Craven directing! Kevin Williamson writing! All of the original characters (those who survived) back in action! I'm not even a fan of the "Scream" franchise and I enjoyed it.
Anyway, before the numbers came in last weekend, the word on the street was that there were two more "Scream" movies on the way. Screenwriter Williamson had planned the fourth film as a kickoff to a new trilogy, of sorts. When I caught up with the cast and Craven at the film's press day recently, I asked them to give us a tease of what they had planned for two more films. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette didn't want to speculate at the time, citing the notion that if they commented it would spoil the fact that their characters survived. However, Mr. Craven was more than happy to offer a few words on what might happen in future installments.
Warning: some spoilers for the ending of "Scream 4" lie ahead!
"I imagine the core characters will continue," he said of Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley. "I suspect they'll be with us until the end, because they just are the heart and soul of the movie and especially since we tend to kill off most of the other people," he said with a hearty laugh. "They'll be with us. There will be some continuation of the drama of Sidney Prescott's family and the ghosts that haunt it."
Will there be more "Scream" movies? Do you want to see more of that Prescott family drama? Tell us in the comments or on Twitter!
