EXCLUSIVE: ‘Detention’ Trailer Promises Serial Killer Action At 2011 SXSW Film Festival

Alien spaceships. Masked serial killers. Tormenting bullies, scumbag principals, spectacularly hot cheerleaders and all that other good stuff that comes with high school life. Compelling topics on their own, no doubt, but how do they work when combined together? Just tune into “Detention” and you’re sure to find out.

Written and directed by Joseph Kahn, “Detention” tells the story of the senior class at Grizzly Lake high school. The road to graduation is never an easy one, but it’s further complicated for these students by the arrival of a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. The only ones who can stop the killer are a handful of students, but they’ll have to cut out of detention if they’re to stand a chance at saving the world.

We’ve got the exclusive trailer for the teen horror-comedy, which premieres at the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival with screenings on March 13, March 15, March 16 and March 18. As you can see, a lot of mayhem and carnage in this one, though that’s not necessarily the tone that’s set up in the first chunk of the trailer. Clearly, “Detention” plans to challenge and blend genres, incorporating horror elements while possibly drawing in some science fiction tropes as well — I’m not the only one who saw that big honking spaceship near the end of the trailer, right? With a cast that includes Dane Cook and Josh Hutcherson, this one’s sure to make some waves at SXSW this year.
