Javier Bardem Confirms 'Bond' Talks, Would Play 007's New Nemesis

Javier BardemWell, this is very good news indeed: Javier Bardem, previously rumored for an unspecified starring role in the untitled "James Bond 23," has confirmed that he's been approached for the film… and he's intrigued.

The Los Angeles Times sat down for a chat with the "Biutiful" actor and covered the recent "Bond" news, with Bardem admitting that an offer has been made. Though he won't accept or reject the role until he's read the screenplay, Bardem confessed that the opportunity to join Bond's wide world of espionage and intrigue is more than a little bit appealing.

"I'm a huge fan of the James Bond saga," said the actor. "When I was little, I went watching Mr. Connery doing James Bond with my father. Who in the world would think I'd be in one of those movies?"

Bardem's participation in the Daniel Craig-starring, Sam Mendes-directed "Bond" flick is contingent on the source material; if the story ain't there, neither is Bardem. But the actor said that his curiosity is quite piqued based on what he heard during a recent meeting with Mendes, especially considering that he would play "Bond's nemesis."

"They're changing the whole thing, the whole dynamic," he revealed. "I'd be playing Bond's nemesis, yes, but it's not that obvious. Everything is more nuanced. It's very intriguing."

One has to wonder, if Bardem accepts the villain role in the next "Bond" movie, how does that affect his status as Roland Deschain in Ron Howard's "The Dark Tower" adaptation? Last we heard, the Spanish star had been approached with an official offer to become the gunslinger. Who knows if his schedule allows him to tackle both roles, but personally, I would prefer to see him go to "Bond." Not just because I'm on Team Viggo, mind you, but also because I know he would give Craig one hell of a run for his money as 007's latest nemesis.
