Winona Ryder Still Hoping For 'Heathers' Sequel

Back in June 2009, Winona Ryder confirmed that a sequel to the angst-ridden 1989 cult classic "Heathers" was indeed in the works, telling Empire magazine: "I swear to God. But for some reason Dan [Waters, writer of the original] and Michael [Lehmann, director] don't want to talk about it. There is a story, and Christian [Slater] has agreed to come back as a kind of Obi-Wan character."

We were cautiously optimistic at the time, thinking that their could be a way to continue the original's tale, which follows a high-school girl named Veronica (Ryder) who enlists the help of rebel J.D. (Slater) to exact vengeance upon the wildly popular and malicious trio of girls who rule the school and are all named -- you guessed it -- Heather. Sadly, we haven't heard much about the project since. So, when MTV News caught up with Ryder at the press day for her new comedy "The Dilemma," we absolutely had to ask her for a status update on the sequel.

"There was an idea, and I was sort of like on their back about like, "We've gotta do it because, you know, Heathers exist outside of high school," Ryder told us. "And there was this whole idea that Dan [Waters], you know, came up with with some little additions from me. At one point, I really wanted it to happen and was trying to get everyone riled up. But last I heard, who knows?"

So what's the big hold-up then? "Well, that's what I think," Ryder said. "I'm like, 'We should do this.' But everyone's doing their things right now."

Sounds like fans probably shouldn't get their hopes up for that long-awaited "Heathers" follow-up, but don't let that stop you from asking Ryder about it should you run in to her on the street.

"It's nice when people bring that up because I'm so proud of that movie," Ryder smiled. "And I love when people come up and ask if there's going to be a sequel. It means it's still in their consciousness."

Would you like to see a "Heathers" sequel after so many years? What would be a good plot?
