"Zoolander 2" is one of those projects that we here at MTV News have been dying to see for, oh, the past nine years. And, lately, there have been an orange-mocha-frappucino-ful of reasons to believe that the wait for a sequel to the 2001 male-supermodel hit might soon be over.
In early October, Justin Theroux told MTV that he and Ben Stiller were putting the finishing touches on the "Zoolander 2" script. Just this week, Jonah Hill confirmed that he's talked to Stiller about playing a villain in the film. And now, we've got some good news from Mr. Blue Steel himself.
"We're working on it, we're working on it," Stiller told MTV News of "Zoolander 2" at last night's "Megamind" red carpet premiere. "Hopefully next year we're going to be making it. But we've been full steam ahead on it."
So what will Derek Zoolander (Stiller) and his pal Hansel (Owen Wilson) be up to in the sequel? "[W]e start off with them in a pretty bad place," Theroux, who plans to direct the film, told us at New York Comic Con. "They're about to ring 40's bell. They have to claw their way back into the fashion industry in some way or another."
Standing in their way will be a new villain, likely to be played by Hill, as well as Will Ferrell's ever-popular fashion visionary Mugatu. "Fingers crossed, anything is possible in Hollywood, but I think you're going to see Mugatu. We are planning on seeing Mugatu," said Theroux. "There are a couple new villains that step onto the stage, which we are all very happy about. And yes, Jonah is the inspiration for one of them."
That jibes with what Hill told MTV during a visit to the set of his upcoming comedy "The Sitter." "If Ben Stiller wants me to be in 'Zoolander,' I just say, 'Thanks for wanting me to be in the movie,'" he said. "I talked with Ben and Justin, and they had an idea of who they wanted me to play, and I kind of riffed on that idea and gave them some other ideas. I'd love to be a part of it whenever they get it together." Sounds like that may be pretty soon.
