Scarlett Johansson has always been just a little bit sexier than humanly possible, and at long last it's clear why: She's an alien! OK, not really, but she's set to play one in "Under the Skin," a new sci-fi drama from "Sexy Beast" writer-director Jonathan Glazer, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.
And ScarJo isn't just playing any alien. According to FilmNation, the company behind the project: "Johansson plays an alien on earth, disguised as the perfect aesthetic form of a mesmerizing woman. She scours remote highways and desolate scenery looking to use her greatest weapon to snare human prey -- her voracious sexuality." Hmmm ... if that didn't sound so much like the plot of a porn movie, it might remind me of the 1995 flick "Species." That puppy starred Natasha Henstridge as a sexy alien intent on getting knocked up -- so she uses her, um, voracious sexuality to seduce men, bang them and then kill them afterward, praying mantis-style.
To be fair, however, alien-baby-making is not the plot of "Under the Skin." The synopsis goes on to say that Johansson's character is "deadly efficient, but over time becomes drawn to and changed by the complexity of life on earth. With this new found humanity and weakening alien resolve, she finds herself on a collision course with her own kind. Taking her point of view throughout, the film presents a unique look at our world through alien eyes."
OK, that sounds a lot better. Now, the film's a cross between "Species" and "E.T." -- something I can totally get behind.
Aside from 2012's "The Avengers," this marks the first role Johansson has lined up since her butt-kicking turn as slinky superhero Black Widow in summer's "Iron Man," though she is rumored to be in the running to play Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" remake, as well as one of four actresses writer-director Cameron Crowe is considering for the role of Matt Damon's wife in the based-on-real-life dramedy "We Bought a Zoo."
Scarlett's involvement in "Under the Skin" isn't likely to affect her chances with those other roles. "Skin" is slated for a late spring 2011 shoot, after Johansson wraps "Avengers" this winter. "Zoo" is shooting this fall, and "Gatsby" probably won't go before the lens until next summer at the earliest. In other words, Johansson could soon be invading the big screen in a variety of flicks as both the perfect woman and the perfect alien. Sounds out of this world.
