This morning, Deadline reported she was one of a gaggle of gorgeous Hollywood A-listers being considered for the pivotal role of Daisy Buchanan in ,a href=”http://moviesblog.mtv.com/tag/baz-luhrmann/”>Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” adaptation, which reportedly has Leonardo DiCaprio in line for the Jay Gatsby role and Tobey Maguire tentatively on tap to play narrator Nick Carraway. And now, Deadline is saying that Scarlett is also one of four actresses writer-director Cameron Crowe is eying to play Matt Damon’s wife in “We Bought a Zoo.”
So which role should Scarlett choose? Or should she just bite the bullet and sign on for both? With “Zoo” set to begin filming soon and “Gatsby” still a ways from any kind of firm start date, the actress certainly has the space on her calendar to fit in both movies. And, more importantly, she’d be perfect for both roles. She has the mix of grace and hidden passion to play a spot-on Daisy Buchanan, the object of Gatsby’s affections and the catalyst for a Long Island summer filled with tragedy. And she’s definitely right in the wheelhouse of Crowe, a writer-director with a proven track record for creating strong female characters — Penny Lane of “Almost Famous,” Diane Cort of “Say Anything…” and Dorothy Boyd of “Jerry Maguire,” to name a few.
The only problem? With so many other actresses still in the running for the two films, Johansson could land both parts… or neither.
On the “Gatsby” front, Rebecca Hall (Johansson’s uptight pal from “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) recently joined DiCaprio and Maguire for a workshop read of the script. But Luhrmann reportedly also wants Keira Knightley, Natalie Portman, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Michelle Williams, Abbie Cornish and Johansson to read with DiCaprio before he decides.
The “We Bought a Zoo” field isn’t quite as packed, but it boasts some big names nonetheless. Crowe is also looking at Rachel McAdams, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Amy Adams as possibilities for Matt Damon’s wife in the based-on-real-life tale of a family who uses their life savings to buy and fix up a dilapidated zoo in the English countryside. We’re pulling for either Johansson or Adams for this one… but we’ll be happy so long as a grown-up Jonathan Lipnicki (Ray from “Jerry Maguire”) cameos and says, “Let’s go to the zoo.” We’re easy like that.
Would you like to see Johansson in “The Great Gatsby” or “We Bought a Zoo”… or both? Tell us in the comments!
