There's not much info out there about J.J. Abrams' super-secret "Super 8" -- guess it wouldn't really be super-secret if we knew the plot and all. But now we can add one more thing to the very brief "Super 8" cheat sheet we've been compiling: a release date. The Paramount Pictures flick has landed the prime summer slot of June 10, 2011.
There it'll do battle with the latest installment in "The Fast and the Furious" franchise, "Fast Five," and the John Krasinski-Kate Hudson rom-com "Something Borrowed," which is really more counter-programming to than competition for the other two flicks.
Back to "Super 8" and what's been revealed so far. Other than the release date, we've been able to piece together a few facts from interviews, press releases and that tantalizing teaser trailer that debuted back in May.
We know that J.J. Abrams is directing from an original script that he wrote, and he says the film pays homage to the Steven Spielberg sci-fi films that had such an impact on him growing up. We know that Spielberg himself is producing, and that Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Ron Eldard, A.J. Michalka and Noah Emmerich are among the cast. And, from that aforementioned trailer, we know that the movie probably has something to do with some kind of extra terrestrial being (we're betting it's not the nice Elliot-and-Reese's-Pieces-loving kind) that is unleashed when a government train transporting it from Area 51 (yep, there's the first clue it's an alien) to a holding facility in Ohio is derailed. Of course, we have no freaking clue why the mystery creature was being shipped to Ohio or why some crazy guy decided to drive his pickup truck head-on into the train. But now, at least, we know we'll find out next June.
