‘Total Recall’ Reboot: Colin Farrell, Tom Hardy And Michael Fassbender Eyed For Lead Role

Ladies and gentlemen, suck in your bellies and try not to breathe in for a little while — we’re going back to Mars, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is nowhere in sight.

According to Heat Vision, director Len Wiseman’sTotal Recall” reboot is set to go before cameras in late March of next year with Neal Moritz and Original Film producing from a script written by Kurt Wimmer. But there’s more to the story than a production start: according to the report, the three front runners to replace Schwarzenegger are Colin Farrell, Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender.

Farrell is considered the front runner, and it’s not hard to understand why. Having just finished filming “Fright Night” and “Horrible Bosses,” Farrell’s schedule is considerably less packed than both Hardy and Fassbender’s.

Hardy is currently shooting “This Means War” opposite Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon, and he plans to follow that project with a lead role in Christopher Nolan’sBatman 3.” Fassbender, meanwhile, is dabbling in comic book fare himself, replacing Ian McKellen in the role of Magneto for director Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class,” currently in production in England.

But while Farrell is the least busy of the three actors, is he the right pick for the part? Frankly, anybody that isn’t Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to bring a considerably different presence to the “Total Recall” set; simply put, there’s no adequate way to replace the Governator.

Farrell, Hardy and Fassbender each have unique qualities that could change the shape of the “Total Recall” reboot. The latter two are both on the rise thanks to “Inception” and “Inglourious Basterds,” respectively, but with their names already attached to big franchises, perhaps this is a better fit for Farrell. The Irish actor hasn’t had a major blockbuster to his name in quite a while, and “Total Recall” could be just the ticket he needs to get back into the big-budget game.
