Keith Richards To Rock On As Johnny Depp’s Dad In ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’

Johnny Depp has always credited Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards as one of the prime inspirations for his iconic “Pirates of the Caribbean” alter-ego Captain Jack Sparrow. So it was only fitting that Richards played Sparrow’s father, Captain Teague, in 2007’s “At World’s End.” And now, the rumors that Richards would reprise that role in the series’ fourth chapter, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” have been confirmed.

The news that Depp and Richards “are currently shooting the series’ fourth installment, where Richards reprises his role as Sparrow’s father” is nonchalantly mentioned in a Reuters article about the musician’s upcoming autobiography “Life,” which apparently lays down a whole lotta smack about Richards’ Rolling Stones band mate Mick Jagger.

Strangely, back in April rumors swirled that Depp was pushing for Jagger to be cast as a “pirate elder” alongside Richards in the fourth “Pirates” film.

While that may seem like a long shot considering Richards and Jagger don’t exactly seem simpatico these days, don’t dismiss the possibility just yet. Richards says despite everything the two are talking about reuniting for another Stones tour. Of course, he calls Jagger “Her Majesty” and “Brenda” while stating this, but what’s a 50-year friendship without a little light heckling? In other words, don’t be surprised if Jagger shows up on screen to make “On Stranger Tides” even stranger.

Richards (and perhaps Jagger?) joins a cast that already includes returning stars Depp as Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, as well as franchise newcomers Penelope Cruz as the angelic temptress Angelica and Ian McShane as the evil Blackbeard. “On Stranger Tides” follows Captain Jack’s quest for the Fountain of Youth and is scheduled to sail into theaters in 3-D on May 20, 2011.
