I know I’m not alone in that sentiment — entire NSFW parody videos have been devoted to the topic — and it appears that Burton is listening to his detractors, for at least one film: the voice cast for “Frankenweenie” has been announced, and there’s nary a Depp nor a Bonham Carter to be found.
That’s not to say that there aren’t some recurring Burton actors in the mix, of course.
Deadline reports the news that “Edward Scissorhands” and “Beetlejuice” actress Winona Ryder is taking on the lead role of Elsa in the stop motion animated Disney flick, while “Ed Wood” alum Martin Landau supplies the voice of Mr. Ryzkruski.
Also joining the cast are “Mars Attacks!” star Martin Short and “Beetlejuice” and “A Nightmare Before Christmas” actress Catherine O’Hara, both of whom are playing five different characters a piece: Short voices Bob, Nassor, Toshiaki, Victor’s Dad and Mr. Bergermeister, while O’Hara plays Edgar, Weird Girl, Victor’s Mom and Gym Teacher.
It’s nice to see that Burton is still playing with some old favorites, but isn’t relying on his all-too usual suspects in Depp and Bonham Carter. Not to knock either actor, but they could both use a Burton break. On the other hand, it’s been far too long since Ryder has had a prominent Burton role, so my enthusiasm for “Frankenweenie” has never been higher than it is right now.
