EXCLUSIVE: ‘Avatar’ Sequel Will Involve Underwater Filming, James Cameron Says

When “Avatar 2” rolls around, moviegoers are going to want to bring a snorkel in addition to their awkward 3-D goggles — according to the main man himself, James Cameron is thinking about shooting scenes underwater.

Cameron’s expertise in the filmmaking arena is rivaled only by his fascination with the ocean depths, having shot several portions of “The Abyss” and “Titanic” underwater and going diving in his spare time. With a world as intricate and unexplored as Pandora, it only makes sense that the highly anticipated sci-fi sequel goes a few leagues under the sea.

“I think what we should do there is — because we’ll have to have characters that are in and under the water — is that we should actually capture them underwater,” Cameron told MTV News. “It’s not the same as going diving, but I like to keep my diving, which I do for pleasure, separate from work.”

But it’s not all fun and games for Cameron. Despite his enthusiasm for the world of deep sea diving, the Oscar-winning director admitted that he’s not as fond of the practice when he’s marrying it with his work life.

“Diving for shooting a movie is work,” he explained. “Diving for exploration is a gas. I like to keep my peas and carrots separate.”

Those pesky vegetables are likely to intermingle when the “Avatar” sequel arrives in theaters, because Cameron is already thinking about what the ocean floor of Pandora looks like.

“[It’s] equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative” as the locations seen in the first “Avatar,” according to Cameron.
