Then everything changed. Jolie departed. Robert Downey Jr. signed on. A replacement for Jolie was needed; the movie is still pinned to following this female survivor who ends up stranded in space. But how do you replace someone whose star shines as brightly as Jolie’s? You take your time. That’s what Cuaron has been doing. And now The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the search has been narrowed to two contenders: Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively. Which would you choose? Which is right for the role? I weight the possibilities after the jump.
If you’re going for pure star power, Johansson is not only a safe bet, she’ll also deliver a top-notch performance. She broke out big back in the ’90s with starring roles in “The Horse Whisperer” and “Ghost World,” but she’s built up plenty of cred since then with her fantastic work in “The Prestige,” “Girl With A Pearl Earring” and, of course, “Lost in Translation.” She’s also got a lot of geek cred for her recent role in “Iron Man 2” as Black Widow, a film which also stars Downey. Her schedule might be a concern, but if Downey can take time away from the Marvel world and “Avengers” for “Gravity,” so can Johansson.
Blake Lively is less of a “safe” pick than Johansson is. The “Gossip Girl” star doesn’t have much geek cred — though she does have a leading role in “Green Lantern” — nor does she have any sort of a background in science fiction. Everyone starts somewhere though, and Lively has proven again and again that she’s one of the greatest assets “Gossip Girl” has. Couple that with her allies at WB — “Lantern” and Ben Affleck’s upcoming “The Town” both feature her in starring roles — and you’ve got another, equally likely contender.
Which one do you think will get the part? Who do you think would do best in the part?
