After three weekends mesmerizing audiences with its ambitious dreamscape backdrop, director Christopher Nolan's "Inception" has finally surrendered box office supremacy to the bumbling cops at the center of director Adam McKay's "The Other Guys."

With an all-star lineup of action stars and comedians like Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, "The Other Guys" was a virtual lock to win the weekend even before it landed in theaters. Taking first place on Friday with $13.2 million, the buddy cop comedy managed to hold its ground with an impressive $35.6 million haul by the end of the weekend.

The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring "Inception" was already considered a long shot to win its fourth straight weekend, but there was also a moment on Friday where it seemed that the high concept action flick would lose out to "Step Up 3-D," the third installment in the dance film franchise. In the end, "Inception" was able to top the "Step Up" sequel by $3.1 million, bringing its domestic total to a very successful $227.7 million in just four weeks. "Step Up 3-D," meanwhile, wound up in third place with $15.5 million. It's the lowest performing opening weekend for any of the "Step Up" films to date.

Angelina Jolie's "Salt" and Steve Carell and Paul Rudd's "Dinner for Schmucks" finished the weekend in fourth and fifth place respectively.

The box office gets a little bit more crowded next weekend with three new arrivals: comic book adaptation "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," Sylvester Stallone's '80s-style action flick "The Expendables," and the considerably less violent "Eat Pray Love" starring Julia Roberts.
