‘Despicable Me’ Outsmarts ‘Predators’ In The Saturday Box Office Report

1. “Despicable Me” ($21.7 million)
2. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” ($11 million)
3. “Predators” ($10.5 million)
4. “Toy Story 3” ($6.7 million)
5. “The Last Airbender” ($5.2 million)

Repelling name aside, it seems that moviegoers are more than happy to embrace “Despicable Me,” Universal’s 3-D animated family film that easily took first place this weekend over producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal’s incoming “Predators.”

Starring Steve Carell as a super-villain who reshapes his image in light of a threat from a rival nemesis (Jason Segel), “Despicable Me” earned $21.7 million during its first day of release. The film is on track for an opening weekend worth more than $50 million, a significantly higher total than what was initially expected from the new family superhero film. With Saturday and Sunday matinees are unaccounted for, it’s very likely that “Despicable Me” will run ahead of the pack with the first place prize.

But the Adrien Brody-starring “Predators” was no slouch, either, taking a solid $10.5 million third place result on Friday. With a reported production budget of $45 million, “Predators” is likely to make significant strides towards recouping its costs within its first weekend in theaters.

“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” stars Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart held strong for a second place finish worth $11 million on Friday. Fourth and fifth place belonged to holdovers “Toy Story 3″ and “The Last Airbender” with $6.7 million and $5.2 million respectively.
