2. “Grown Ups” ($14.5 million)
3. “Knight and Day” ($6.4 million)
4. “The Karate Kid” ($4.7 million)
5. “The A-Team” ($1.8 million)
Are Tom Cruise’s days on top of the box office over? That’s the question that many are asking after his latest action comedy “Knight and Day” failed to achieve the success it set out to attain on Friday, kicking off a box office weekend where the “Toy Story” threequel and Adam Sandler’s “Grown Ups” are set to win big.
To the surprise of nobody, “Toy Story 3” emerged in first place on Friday with $18 million earned. Already the single best Pixar opening of all time, “Toy Story” 3 is looking to repeat its success with potential for more than $60 million this weekend. It’s a virtual certainty that Woody, Buzz and the gang will cross $200 million by Sunday’s end.
Second place belonged to “Grown Ups,” the new film featuring veteran comedians and old friends Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider. The high school reunion picture took home $14.5 million on Friday, a strong showing when compared to the $18 million earned by “Toy Story 3.”
It’s a less pleasant story for Cruise’s “Knight and Day,” which co-stars Cameron Diaz. The film opened softly on Wednesday to the tune of $3.6 million, with $6.4 million on Friday. It’s likely to earn $25 million once the weekend is over, but that’s hardly a fantastic result given the combined star power of Cruise and Diaz. In recent days, rumors emerged stating that failure for “Knight and Day” could portend a difficult future for the fourth “Mission Impossible” outing, which Cruise is currently attached to headline for Paramount. We’ll stay tuned to see how that develops.
The fourth and fifth place slots played out as expected with “The Karate Kid” earning $4.7 million and “The A-Team” securing $1.8 million. “Jonah Hex” was barely on the map in 10th place with $500,000, leaving many people scratching their heads wondering what went wrong with the DC Comics adaptation.
