Even with four new major releases in theaters this weekend — including films starring notable names such as Russell Brand, Ashton Kutcher and Owen Wilson — “Shrek Forever After” continued its winning streak with a $25.3 million first place finish by Sunday’s conclusion, thanks to a combination of increased theater count and higher prices for 3-D ticket sales.
Of the new releases, “Get Him to the Greek” performed the best. The Russell Brand and Jonah Hill-starring comedy earned $17.4 million this weekend, matching the same number projected based on Friday’s performance. “Greek’s” opening domestic haul nearly cuts the film’s reported $40 million production budget in half — and that’s not even accounting for international numbers, currently unavailable.
Coming in third place was “Killers,” the romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl. Kutcher stars as a former secret agent who retires from the spy game for a quiet life with his wife (Heigl), but his dangerous lifestyle catches up with him again when some old foes emerge from out of the woodwork. Despite the deadly premise, “Killers” barely hit the target with only $16.1 million, a small chunk of its $75 million production budget.
“Marmaduke” and “Splice” fared worse, with neither new release cracking the top five. It’s an especially disappointing result for “Marmaduke” as it was the widest release of the weekend’s new offerings by a significant margin of more than 300 theaters.
