‘Sex And The City 2′ Beats ‘Prince Of Persia’ In The Saturday Box Office Report

1. “Sex and the City 2” ($13 million)
2. “Shrek Forever After” ($11.3 million)
3. “Prince of Persia” ($10.3 million)
4. “Iron Man 2” ($4 million)
5. “Robin Hood” ($2.8 million)

Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes have made their way back into theaters nationwide, bringing with them all of the box office bravado one would expect from the sex-hunting, city-dwelling quartet of “Sex and the City 2.” The movie made its flashy debut with a $13 million Friday, hailing a taxi all the way to a first place finish.

“Sex and the City 2″ entered the Friday arena having already won a $14.2 million check from its opening day performance on Thursday. As Carrie and her pals continue to strut down the catwalk of the holiday weekend, they should have little trouble matching or surpassing the $57 million opening weekend they enjoyed with “Sex and the City” in 2008.

That same success won’t follow Walt Disney’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring adaptation of the video game of the same name. Despite Gyllenhaal’s star power and similarly high caliber actors including Ben Kingsley, these performances weren’t enough to elevate “Persia” past a third place finish worth $10.3 million on Friday.

Hanging onto second place was “Shrek Forever After,” the fourth and potentially final installment in the not-so-mean green ogre fantasy franchise from DreamWorks Animation. The “Shrek” sequel earned $11.3 million on Friday thanks largely to an expansion into 1,000 extra theaters with the increased price of 3-D ticket sales.
