I am unashamedly excited for "The Smurfs," a 3-D live-action/CG adaptation of the classic cartoon series, hitting theaters in August 2011. I can understand why some might be worried; director Raja Gosnell's two "Scooby-Doo" movies weren't exactly smash hits. However, as a fan of the original cartoon, I thought that he managed to stay incredibly close to the spirit of the classic TV series. Except for all of the silly supernatural hooey.
I'm confident that he'll do solid work with "The Smurfs," especially with a live-action cast that includes Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays and -- best of all -- "Simpsons" voice actor Hank Azaria as the villainous Gargamel. We asked Azaria a few weeks ago about how he's going to transform for the role, and he promised an accurate portrayal. Based on the set pics that surfaced over the weekend -- the movie is currently shooting in New York City -- he wasn't lying. Check out the full image (compliments of Splash News) after the jump.
Perfect, right? Straight down to the red cloth booties. For comparison, here's an image of the O.G. Gargamel:
