This Friday, Martin Scorsese follows up his Oscar-winning work on “The Departed” with “Shutter Island,” based on the Dennis Lehane novel of the same name. The story follows a pair of U.S. Marshals who are assigned to investigate an inmate disappearance at an mental institution situated on a remote island. There turns out to be much more going on than you might expect; this is no rote mystery.
That’s about it for big openings. Everything else is opening on just a handful of screens, with the most high-profile of the bunch being Roman Polanski’s psychological thriller “The Ghost Writer,” starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan. There are a number of others too, including “Happy Tears,” “The Good Guy,” “Dreamkiller,” “Blood Done Sign My Name” and “Celine: Through the Eyes of the World.”
