James Cameron's box office juggernaut, "Avatar," is fresh off of owning the weekend box office for the seventh week in a row. The numbers keep slipping though, with number two box office winners gaining more ground on the sci-fi epic each week. Will this be the weekend that "Avatar" falls to number two? Let's take a look at the competition...
Of the two wide releases opening this week, only one threatens to really pull audiences away from "Avatar." It's the Pierre-Morel-directed action flick "From Paris With Love," starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. The fairly straightforward story follows two mismatched intelligence agents charged with derailing a terrorist plot. As a "Dune" fan, I'm certainly pro-Morel... but I don't think it's going to topple "Avatar."
At the other end of the spectrum is "Dear John," the week's date movie. Channign Tatum and Amanda Seyfried star as lovers who must contend with the long absence of Tatum's character, a soldier, while he is deployed overseas. Once again, not looking like an "Avatar" killer.
There are a slew of limited release offerings as well, but those aren't in a position to compete. Still, there are several good alternatives for people who are burned out on the Na'vi: "District 13: Ultimatum," the "Red Riding Trilogy," recent Sundance contender "Frozen" and detective drama "Terribly Happy."
