Mel Gibson Moves From The ‘Edge Of Darkness’ To Telling Us ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation’

Now that Mel Gibson is finally back in action with last weekend’s “Edge of Darkness,” some fans might be wondering why the dude took seven years off after his last starring role in 2002’s “Signs.” Others might be asking if we’re going to see Mel in front of the camera again before the year 2016.

According to the “Lethal Weapon” legend, the answer will be on the big screen before too long – as he’s about to begin work on a new film.

“Yeah, it’s called ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation,’” he explained to us recently. “It’s about a Gringo, and a Mexican prison.”

Scheduled to begin shooting in the Mexican city of Veracruz this March, the flick is about a fugitive (Gibson) caught by the Mexican authorities and thrown in jail. He winds up in a dirty, drug-infested prison where a 9-year-old boy has to teach him how to survive.

“I just got finished writing something with these guys,” he said of his third writing effort, after “Apocalypto” and “The Passion of the Christ.” “We’ll get it up on its feet, and see if it flies. We’re looking at an industry that’s changing daily, in very big ways.”

As is Gibson’s career, since he’s spent the last few years behind the camera as a writer/director. “I’ve already written it,” he said of the “Summer” script. “It’s in Mexico… it’s about a lot things, not necessarily that [country], but it is set in Mexico.”

Although much of the film’s plot is being kept under wraps, Gibson said he’s eager to act in movies again, with “Darkness” coming to theaters, Jodie Foster’s “The Beaver” due later this year, and “Summer” after that. “Of course [I’m eager to act],” he said enthusiastically. “A first timer is gonna do it… his name is Adrian Grunberg, and he’s tremendous.”

Grunberg was first assistant director on “Apocalypto” back in 2006. The film will reunite much of the “Apocalypto” team, as it is also under the eye of producer Stacy Perskie – previously the second assistant director on “Apocalypto.”

“He was my first AD on ‘Apocalypto,’ he’s great,” Gibson said of Grunberg, who he has taken under his wing. “He’s the hardest-working man in showbiz.”
