‘Chuck’ Episode 3.03: ‘Chuck Versus The Angel De La Muerte’

Title: “Chuck Versus the Angel de la Muerte”

Story: The Buy More Nerd Herd is left behind in tonight’s new episode of “Chuck” when Team Bartowski is assigned to protect a soon-to-reform a South American dictator (Armand Assante) from an assassin. They end up at an embassy cocktail party with Chuck’s sister Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and brother-in-law Devon (Ryan McPartlin) in tow. Devon, who knows Chuck’s secret identity following the events of the previous season, wants to play the spy game too… only things don’t quite work the way he’d hoped. Spoilers coming.

Back On Track: After last night’s two-hour stumble, “Chuck” finds its groove again with a tight, thrilling adventure. There’s an acceptable amount of time spent on Chuck’s continuing issues with tapping into the Intercept and his troubled relationship with agent Walker, but it is not the focus. Devon is a welcome addition to the group, even if it is only temporary. And, as we find out at the end of the episode, he’s not out yet.

Put The Ring On It: It doesn’t become clear until late in the episode, but The Ring is back. They’re the ones orchestrating the assassination attempt against the Costa Gravas dictator, though their motives remain murky. All we know at this point is that the assassination was designed to prevent Costa Gravas from changing over to a democratic republic. Commies? Fascists? Evil alien invaders from Mars? Ehhhh… probably not. We’ll find out soon enough though.

Casey At The Bat: A subplot runs through the episode involving Casey (Adam Baldwin), who unsuccessfully tried to off the Costa Gravas dictator in his younger days. Now assigned to protect the man, our gruff CIA operative is not a happy camper. He has to sit on the sidelines for the mission… until circumstances demand otherwise. Everything works out in the end, with amusing results.

Looking Forward: Next week will open with Devon in the hands of The Ring. Tonight’s episode ended with a big fakeout, leading us to believe that the young doctor had actually died at the hands of the assassin he indirectly helped foil. The “next week on” teaser spoils all however; Devon is alive, if not particularly well, a subject of Ring interrogations. I wonder if Chuck and the rest of Team Bartowski will be able to save him.
