Without a doubt, 2009 was a kind year for the moviegoing crowd thanks to a wealth of brilliant blockbusters, smaller slices of science fiction, quietly intense dramas and plenty of other standout stories. But that's all in the past now, boys and girls. 2010 is bound to bring bright film prospects that are at least as cool as 2009's offerings, if not better.
It would take a long, long time to go through every single movie that I'm itching to see, but of the new year's upcoming film slate, these are the five theatrical debuts that I'm most excited for.
Release Date: August 20, 2010
Directed By: Sylvester Stallone
Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Eric Roberts, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger
The Rundown: There's only one thing you need to know about "The Expendables." For the first time, you'll see Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis together in an action movie. There's also a giant ensemble cast of ass-kickers, many of whom play crack soldiers charged with taking on a South American army and its leaders. Coolness.
CLASH OF THE TITANS
Release Date: March 26, 2010
Directed By: Louis Leterrier
Starring: Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, Alexa Davalos
The Rundown: The son of Zeus may be a puny mortal, but he'll gives the lords of the underworld something to worry about when he embarks on a quest to avert their coming move on Heaven. Also, he's Sam Worthington. In the past year, we've seen that dude successfully take on both Big Business, Na'vi style, and Skynet. There's nothing he can't do.
Release Date: July 9, 2010
Directed By: Nimrod Antal
The Rundown: It has been well over a decade since the last solo "Predator" installment, and while the dreadlocked alien hunters have appeared in other movies since, the lackluster quality of those "films" have depleted my enthusiasm for the franchise quite a bit. Still, I'm morbidly curious about "Predators," particularly in the hands of producer Robert Rodriguez. Sure, Adrien Brody and Topher Grace aren't my first choices for leading men, but the addition of badasses like Danny Trejo and Laurence Fishburne is enough to keep me excited. I'm not completely convinced that this movie won't be a trainwreck, but it can't possibly be worse than "Alien vs. Predator."
Release Date: July 16, 2010
Directed By: Christopher Nolan
The Rundown: Nolan's latest original picture is shrouded in secrecy with details so light that they are practically non-existent. Other than hearing that "Inception" focuses on the mind as the scene of the crime, we really don't know all too much, even after the release of the latest trailer. Still, the combined efforts of Nolan, DiCaprio and an electric ensemble cast including the wonderful Ken Watanabe have me more excited for a film that I know absolutely nothing about than I ever thought possible.
Release Date: December 17, 2010
Directed By: Joseph Kosinski
The Rundown: Almost thirty years after the first movie, is anyone even interested in a "Tron" sequel? I certainly am, particularly because it's no longer called "Tr2n," but more so because of the footage that's already been revealed. With the stunning Olivia Wilde in there alongside a de-aged Jeff Bridges — this time as a villainous yellow program — you can absolutely count me among those that can't wait for this film's release. From a watchdog standpoint, it'll also be interesting to see how "Tron Legacy" fares against "The Green Hornet," Seth Rogen's action flick that comes out on the same day. Sometimes there's nothing more entertaining than a little behind-the-scenes drama.
