John Rhys-Davies Won't Return To Middle-Earth For 'The Hobbit' -- Not As A Dwarf, At Least

John Rhys-DaviesNobody tosses a dwarf — not even "Lord of the Rings" actor John Rhys-Davies, who recently declared that he won't be throwing himself back into dwarven garb anytime soon, despite offers to the contrary.

In an interview with Empire, Rhys-Davies revealed that he has been approached about appearing in "The Hobbit," the Guillermo del Toro-directed and Peter Jackson-produced sequel to the beloved "Rings" trilogy. Sadly, the actor doesn't plan on elongating his beard and truncating his height anytime soon — his days as a battle-hungry dwarf are over.

"I've already been asked and to be honest with you, I wouldn't," Rhys-Davies said about returning to Middle-Earth for "The Hobbit."

"I have already completely ruled it out," he continued. "There's a sentimental part of me that would love to be involved again. Really I am not sure my face can take that sort of punishment any more."

Rhys-Davies starred as Gimli in the three "The Lord of the Rings" films, not to mention providing the likeness and voice for Treebeard. Gimli's father Gloin has a role in "The Hobbit," but it's not a part that Rhys-Davies wants to play — nor does he want to play any of the movie's many dwarves.

"Why would you want to do it if it was just a couple of shots?" he posited. "When you've been 1 of 1, why would you want to be 1 of 13?"

Still, that's not to say a trip to Middle-Earth is completely out of the question for the actor. While Rhys-Davies isn't interested in furthering the dwarf brand, he could see himself exploring another creature within the Tolkien universe.

"I'd be interested in trying to create a different type of persona within ['The Hobbit']," he said. "That is challenging as an actor. I'd really prefer to play something quite different. Maybe an Elf."
