Free IMAX Teases Of 'Avatar' Coming Your Way On August 21

Did I mention that they're free? What's that? Right there in the headline? Oh. Well they are. Free, that is.

Fans of James Cameron's "Avatar," the long-awaited directorial follow-up to "Titanic," will no longer have to wait until December 18 for a glimpse of the reportedly stunning digital 3D feature. Provided they don't mind a crowd, that is. As we previously reported in an interview with Cameron at San Diego Comic-Con, IMAX theaters in the U.S. and Canada will be offering free access to screenings of an extended trailer for "Avatar" next Friday. Here's what Cameron had to say about it:

The extended trailer is a 16-minute affair, fronted by a brief intro from Cameron. The specific theaters showing the footage haven't been announced yet, but that information should be hitting soon. The Hollywood Reporter also reveals that more conventional trailers will start screening the weekend of August 21, and that the extended one will show in front of select "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" IMAX screenings.

The standalone screenings will supposedly run between 6pm and 7pm, with two showings during that hour. Just late enough to ensure that after-work crowds can arrive to see the hundreds of fanboys and girls who lined up earlier in the day. Oy, this is going to be a mess. Even the IMAX folks think so; their Filmed Entertainment chief Greg Foster said, "I think it's going to be a bit of a stampede."

A bit? Ha!

Are you excited for "Avatar"? Will you be lining up on August 21 for the free footage? Or would you prefer to remain pure until the movie is unveiled in its full glory on December 18?
