Variety reports that Reubens is reviving his insanely insane alter-ego Pee-wee Herman for a limited engagement run of “The Pee-wee Herman Show” at the Fonda Theater in Hollywood. The shows begin on November 8th and will feature a whole host of “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” regulars, including Chairry, Pterri the pterodactyl and Miss Yvonne.
“It’s time,” Reubens said of Pee-wee’s comeback. “My Pee-wee suit and red bow tie are at the ready — and this is proof that white shoes are cool past Labor Day.”
Pee-wee has been absent from movie theaters since 1988’s “Big Top Pee-wee” — insert obligatory Paul Reubens arrest joke here. While Herman’s return via theatrical performance is certainly welcome, it’s not exactly the plan Reubens had in mind two years ago.
“I feel like the time is really ripe right now,” Reubens told MTV News in 2007, indicating his desire to don the red bow tie on the big screen once more. “A lot of the kids who grew up with the show are young adults. The college kids are middle-aged adults. I feel like I have enough of a built-in audience to make back an investment.”
At the time, Reubens detailed two different screenplays written for the Pee-wee character. One film focused on the puppet land beyond Pee-wee’s playhouse, while the other was a decidedly darker version featuring Herman as a famous singer going through a traumatic downward spiral brought on by celebrity.
With those scripts in mind, Reubens’ decision to put on a series of Pee-wee performances might be a pretty smart move. If the comedian can draw in significant Pee-wee loving crowds — something he believed still existed as recently as 2007 — then Reubens could have a reference point for studios wondering if a new Pee-wee Herman movie is financially sensible.
Depending on the success of these shows, it’s very possible that Pee-wee might ascend to the big top of Hollywood once more.
