Sam Neill stars in “Madness” as John Trent, an insurance investigator tasked with looking into the mysterious disappearance of acclaimed horror novelist Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow). Since Cane’s disappearance leaves his latest book unfinished, the publisher calls Trent in to find out what happened. The investigation leads Trent to the town of Hobb’s End — a fictional location named in the title of Cane’s unfinished book — where some unusual stuff starts to happen.
Those books comprise the collected works of Sutter Cane. They’re not real of course, but they do look pretty convincing. According to the seller, all six books are signed by Robert Kurtzman and the set also includes a letter of authenticity written by the same. Kurtzman is a visual effects artist whose stamp can be seen on the likes of “Tremors,” “Army of Darkness,” “Hostel” and, of course, “In the Mouth of Madness.”
As you might expect of a movie with the cult status of “Madness,” the asking price is rather steep for this set. The seller’s Buy It Now price is listed at $2,499. I’ll be curious to see if it actually sells for that amount. Whatever happens, this fake book collection is going to make some Carpenter fan very happy.
